Starz Rebrand

The Brand:
Starz came to us with an enormous undertaking: to rebrand each of their seven networks, including their main service. Though the other channels are each focused on a specific niche (Kids, Family, Indie, Comedy) they all needed to sound and feel like the movies.  The brand is big, expensive, and cinematic, and what better way to express that than in sound? Danny Elfman had written a theme for Starz a few years back, and we wanted to retain that theme, but expand upon it. This would become the mnemonic for all the channels.

The Sound:
For the main service, we know that the best way to get a huge Hollywood sound is to use a Hollywood composer and record with a live orchestra.  So after we had written and demo’ed some terrific music, we flew over to Europe and recorded a 60-piece orchestra. For the other packages, we took equally authentic approaches inspired by the channels’ unique genres.  For Starz Family, we used a top pop composer and recorded a Green Day-style song in the studio; StarzInBlack uses hip-hop grooves and synths; Starz Cinema and Starz Edge utilize an indie-composer approach. Each package incorporates the Starz theme in a unique and colorful way. For each network, we delivered a full music package, mixed in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound.
